Christmas On The Nile

17th January 2025

If you're going to explore this ancient land, combining a river cruise with dedicated time in Cairo isn't just a luxury - it's essential.

Cairo's energy hits you the moment you land - a metropolis of 10 million souls, where past and present exist in constant, captivating tension.

My husband and I chose the festive season to give ourselves the best Christmas gift: a twelve-night Viking cruise-tour down the Nile, beginning with three nights exploring the wonders of Cairo.

As a luxury travel advisor, I often recommend a cruise-tour for exploring Egypt. The country's ancient wonders stretch across vast distances, and navigating between them requires careful planning and local expertise. A cruise-tour not only simplifies these logistics but also offers the best of both worlds—letting you immerse yourself in the country's vibrant cities and its tranquil riverside landscapes. It’s a thoughtfully curated way to experience Egypt from two unique perspectives: the bustling energy of its urban centres and the timeless serenity of life along the Nile.

Our journey began in Cairo, where those first three days unfolded like pages from a history book, brought to life by our Egyptologist guide, Hanan, who became our constant companion for the journey ahead.

Standing before Cairo's greatest treasures.

Through her expertise, the pyramids of Giza revealed their secrets - stories of the 4th Dynasty when King Khufu reigned, glimpses of the ancient workers' village, and traces of where the Nile once flowed. A short drive from Cairo led us to Saqqara, where the Step Pyramid of Djoser has stood for 4,700 years, Egypt's first pyramid and a testament to the innovative spirit of the Third Dynasty.

After our immersion in Cairo's wonders, Viking escorted us back to the airport, where we joined our group of fellow travellers for a private charter flight to Luxor. Known as the world's greatest open-air museum, Luxor is a treasure trove of ancient history, home to the sprawling Karnak Temple, the majestic Luxor Temple, and the awe-inspiring Valley of the Kings.

Best explored by river cruise, this region comes to life as you sail along the Nile, connecting these ancient landmarks with ease. As the Viking Sobek came into view, fresh from its 2024 debut, I knew the next seven nights would be really special.

Named after the ancient Egyptian crocodile god, the Viking Sobek is a state-of-the-art vessel specifically built to cruise the Nile.

The ship's sophisticated Scandinavian design offered a serene contrast to the ancient wonders we explored each day - a detail I know my luxury-seeking clients would appreciate.

Through Hanan's passionate storytelling, hieroglyphics transformed into vivid tales of pharaohs, and ancient temples sprang to life with stories of love, power, and legacy. Every morning brought new discoveries, but none quite as magical as our pre-dawn hot air balloon ride.

A one of a kind experience: Hot air ballooning over the Valley of the Kings.

This is an experience I will be recommending to my clients as something everyone must do - soaring quietly during sunrise over the Valley of the Kings, the Temple of Hatshepsut, and watching the first light hit the desert mountains is a memory that will remain in my mind forever.

Life aboard the Sobek proved equally enriching. Between temples, pyramids, and learning about Kings & Pharaohs, our onboard activities helped to immerse us in Egyptian culture. We learnt to write our names in hieroglyphics, picked up Arabic phrases, and discovered the fascinating world of ancient Egyptian medicine. A cooking demonstration in the Aquavit Terrace added local flavours to our cultural education which was such a fantastic touch.

Christmas Day in Aswan.
Christmas Day in Aswan.

In Aswan, Christmas Day brought one of our most memorable experiences. While Egypt's Muslim majority went about their usual routines, we found ourselves welcomed into a vibrant Nubian village. Sitting cross-legged in a family home and participating in a primary school lesson offered a glimpse into the warmth and traditions of this unique community. It was a truly special and heartwarming way to spend Christmas.

Abu Simbel, Egypt
Abu Simbel, Egypt

Further south, Abu Simbel left us speechless. This temple, perhaps Egypt's most beautiful, stands as a testament to both ancient and modern engineering. In the 1960s, the entire structure was moved piece by piece to save it from flooding - a four-year project that ensured Ramses II's masterpiece would continue to inspire future generations. A short charter flight made this remarkable site easily accessible, another thoughtful touch in Viking's carefully crafted journey.

After seven beautiful days on the Nile, we returned to Cairo for a fitting finale: the brand-new G.E.M: the Grand Egyptian Museum. Opened in October 2024, this architectural marvel echoes the Great Pyramids in its design. Hours disappeared as we explored its countless treasures - from royal jewellery to ancient coffins, each artifact telling its own story of Egypt's rich history.

Returning home, the value of a cruise- tour through Egypt has never been clearer. In a country where logistics can overwhelm the magic, Viking has created something rare: a journey where ancient wonders feel effortless. As a travel advisor, that's exactly what I want for my clients.
