Arguably one of South Australia’s best kept secrets, The Limestone Coast offers locals and travellers a plethora of spectacular natural wonders. The region is best explored by car, driving between towns and enjoying remarkable views along the coastline, and eventually inland to iconic Aussie bushland.
From snorkeling in crystal-clear waters to fine wine tastings, we share the best experiences you can enjoy on your next visit.
Robe
Known as “South Australia’s favourite seaside town” - Robe is the perfect place for travellers seeking a relaxing coastal escape. Boasting beautiful beaches, stunning boutiques, restaurants and luxury accommodation, it’s everything you would expect and more for your beach stay.
Give in to the ‘beachy-vibes’ and opt for an indulgent beach house for your accommodation. You’ll be spoilt for choice with many modern options available like Driftwood House or The Pelican Shed - both conveniently located near beaches, dining options and boutiques.
Port MacDonnell and the Shipwreck Trail
From Robe, you can continue your journey south along the coastline to Port MacDonnell following the route of the Shipwreck Trail. The coastline trail tells the story of South Australia’s tragic maritime history and numerous shipwrecks - wellworth exploring for those who are maritime enthusiasts (Download the trail booklet).
For those holding out for the perfect fishing spot, head to the waters of Port MacDonnell where you can catch an array of different fish. You can also easily find a fishing charter to take you out to the deeper waters to catch snapper, mako sharks, hapuka and more. The other must-try experience is enjoying a leisurely snorkel in Ewen’s Pond with crystal clear waters - so clear you can see 80 metres deep.
Mount Gambier
Prepare to see some pretty impressive geological wonders in Mount Gambier. Visit the famed 72-metre Blue Lake occupying one of the extinct volcano’s craters. Enjoy a tour around the lake and learn of its geological history, or enjoy a leisurely stroll around the circumference of the lake.
Insider Tip: You cannot swim in the Blue Lake. If you fancy a dip, you can visit Little Blue Lake located about 10 minutes away at Mount Schank.
Then there’s the Umpherston Sinkhole also known as the Sunken Garden. Due to natural occurring events, a flourishing forest-like ecosystem thrives in the sinkhole and houses native possums.
Insider Tip: Visit the Sunken Garden at dusk and feed possums fresh fruit.
If you happen to be visiting the area around May and June, take an evening trip to OneFortyOne pine forest to see luminous mushrooms. The soft-green glow lights up the forest making for a magical atmosphere.
Coonawarra Wine Region
Who could forget the Coonawarra Wine Region, home to producing some of Australia’s best wines for over 120 years. Take the time to try the different flavours and popular Cab Sav’s in the area at the many wineries and cellar doors. View the full list of Wineries and Cellar Doors here.
It’s no wonder South Australians have been keeping this region a secret for so long. Believe it or not, we’ve only shared a glimpse of what the Limestone Coast has on offer.
