Opera under the stars at Uluru

5th February 2020

In what could be the event of the year, fly to Uluru for a spectacular Opera Gala under the stars.

Picture Australia’s finest opera singers, performing a showcase of some of the most loved songs of the operatic world, accompanied by a chamber orchestra, in the shadows of Uluru.

With the concert set around dusk, the brilliance of the performers will be matched by the fading light of the sun, followed by the ethereal glow of the phenomenal Field of Light – an elaborate gallery of 50,000 glass spheres covering the equivalent of seven football fields.
It makes the spine tingle just thinking about it.

The Opera Gala concert will take place on 12 December 2020, and Travel Associates has a fantastic three-day package that includes a ticket to this once-in-a-lifetime event. The package will have you yelling “bravo”, as it includes three nights’ accommodation at the five-star Sails in the Desert resort, an oasis in the ochre-red sands of the centre, and transfers to and from the airport.

Opera Australia made its debut at Uluru in 2019, and the event was so successful, with tickets selling out in days, that plans were quickly hatched to do it again in 2020. Lyndon Terracini AM, the Artistic Director of Opera Australia, said that it was an honour to perform in front of Uluru, and that you could feel the excitement and awe ripple through the audience.

“We’re thrilled to be partnering with Voyages again to announce our return to Uluru in 2020 – it will be a fabulous showcase of our incredible singers and musicians, combined with the spectacular outback landscape and the spiritual energy that is Uluru”, said Lyndon.

Sails in the Desert

The resort sits comfortably in its spiritual environment, with its 228 rooms and suites beautifully styled and themed with local art. The pool, some of it shadowed by ancient gumtrees, is the place to refresh after a day spent perhaps exploring Uluru, participating in some of the complimentary Indigenous cultural activities around Ayers Rock Resort or perhaps doing a tour to Kata Tjuta. Before dinner have a drink at the Walpa Lobby Bar, before settling into Ilkari, the onsite restaurant, or perhaps you have booked the award-winning Sounds of Silence dinner. The resort also boasts the Red Ochre Spa, if a massage or facial is desired.

Field of Dreams

Make the most of your trip by adding a sunrise Field of Light tour, so you can have a closer look at this exhibition, named Tili Wiru Tjuta Nyakutjaku or ‘looking at lots of beautiful lights’ in local Pitjantjatjara. Artist Bruce Munro developed the LED light bulbs to look like  plants amongst the desert vegetation and feels that it is even more beautiful now that the lights and the vegetation are tangling together – as in nature.  Another option that could be added is an Uluru Sunset BBQ dinner.
