Flying to the US just got a whole lot easier with new direct routes taking off from Brisbane next year.
Qantas plans to fly Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners from Brisbane to San Francisco and Chicago, adding to its network of non-stop US services from the city.
Three times weekly direct flights from to San Francisco will commence on 9 February, complementing existing Qantas services from Sydney and Melbourne.
Meanwhile, the Brisbane to Chicago service will launch on 20 April, marking the opening of a new Qantas gateway to the United States. Operating four times a week, the direct service will cut six hours off a current return flight from the Queensland capital.
At 14,326 kilometres, the Brisbane-Chicago route will be the fourth longest in the world, and the second longest on the Qantas network. An expected flying time of 16-17 hours will be passed in comfort thanks to the Dreamliner’s next-generation seating and jet lag-reducing features.
Paying homage to the Chicago Bears’ 1985 football team, winners of the 1986 Superbowl (apparently, they’re one of the best teams in history), Qantas has selected flight numbers QF85/86 for its Chicago operations.
Qantas International’s Acting Chief Executive, Naren Kumar, said that Chicago will be of particular interest to Australians considering it’s the country’s first direct link to the city and with tourists wanting to experience some of the culture and history that Chicago is famous for.
